Mowing patterns
Just like a professional groundsman, MAS Mower 01 is able to produce a wide range of mowing patterns of varying stripe width across the turf. Pre-programmed into the onboard computer, the patterns available include:
Straight lines at any required angle.
Cross hatching and diamonds. Circles and semi-circles.

Accuracy and navigation
The MAS Mower 01 is equipped with a long-range, eye-safe rotating laser scanner, which operates in conjuction with a series of fixed reflectors positioned around the area being mown. An on-board computer calculates the mowers position to centimetre level accuracy, sending signals to the steering system to keep the machine moving along it's pre-programmed path with an exceptional level of accuracy and repeatability. This navigation system has been used successfully for many years in automated factory environments.

Care of the turf
McMurtry understands the importance of caring for the surface when carying out any turf maintenance task. For the reason, MAS Mower 01 allows cutting patterns to be varied in order to minimise possible compaction of the surface caused by following the same route time after time.
Similarly, the risk of turf damage caused by the manoeuvring of the mower on soft surfaces can be minimised by altering the turning angles to suit the condition of the turf, or by avoiding ground currently under repair. In addition to instructing the MAS Mower 01 to avoid specific pitch areas (e.g. Goal Area, Penalty Box), the user can also define temporary obstacles - masking any part of the pitch that needs to be avoided.
Such factors can be easily programmed into the machine to enable rapid selection of the most appropriate mowing style for any particular day.
At installation time, a Premium Area can be defined (usually the central pitch rectangle between the Penalty Areas). Whilst still cutting/rolling this area, whenever possible the MAS Mower 01 will avoid turning or travelling across this area to maintain the integrity of the pattern being laid down. This Premium Area can be disabled to increase cutting speed.

Grass collection
At installation time, one or more grass dumps can be defined, usually around the perimeter of the work area. When MAS Mower 01 receives a "grassbox full" signal (the grassbox contains infra-red beam sensors),it will finish the current stroke it is cutting, then move to the nearest grass dump to empty it's grassbox.
After emptying the grass, the vehicle will resume it's mowing.
With the addition of the included grassbox panel, the user can choose not to
collect the grass clippings. This panel fits on top of the grass chute,
returning the clippings to the topof the cylinder, where they are mulched before
being returned to the pitch.

Power
Powered by rechargable batteries driving electric motors, MAS Mower 01 can work for more than six hours unattended, with no emissions and at very low sound levels. At an average speed of 3.2 km/h (2mph) the machine is able ot cover in excess of 12,000 sq m (14,346 sq yds) before needing recharging.
Low maintenance and running costs are assured by the absence of a combustion engine and hydraulic system. A 48V battery charger is included with each vehicle, which requires only a single 13A socket.

Safety
MAS Mower 01 has been designed from the ground up to operate with absolute
safety for the protection of staff, the playing surface and the machine itself.
Standard on-board safety features include:
Ultrasonic obstacle detection
multi-piece cowling and safety guarding
Fail-safe soft bumpers front and rear
Warning sounder and flashing beacons when moving
Operator presence button for manual operation
Three emergency stop buttons give instant shut-down
Constant motor temperature and cylinder speed monitoring
User friendly interface with mower control systems
Maximum security
After switching the machine on, users must enter a password via the Pendant keypad - this prevents unauthorised use of the MAS Mower 01. At the end of a regime, the MAS Mower either powers down, or reverts to "Secure" mode - requiring re-entry of the password before operation. This ensures the vehicle is safe to work unattended - even overnight.
Different users can also be assigned different user levels. This allows more specialised maintenance tasks (e.g. blade adjustment) to be restricted to trained personnel, whilst still allowing other users to deliver the vehicle to the work area and begin a regime.

Manual control
Through use of the Pendant (pictured right), it is possible to drive the MAS Mower 01 in Manual Mode - this allows the user to deliver the vehicle from storage to the work area. It is also possible to mow manually - allowing the user to test the cutting unit after adjustment. The Pendant also gives the user access to:
Regime selection
Regime start/continue
Grass dump selection
Calibration
Cleaning / adjustment tasks

Optional extras
GSM Modem
This allows the MAS Mower 01 to send a text message to the current user, informing them that the work is complete, or requesting attention is required. The user can also check the status of the vehicle, by sending it a text message. The vehicle will reply to this text message, with useful information such as work progress.

Installation
Before the MAS Mower 01 can operate in a new environment, navigation targets must be installed - these reflective strips are 0.2m wide by 1m high, and allow the MAS Mower 01 to reach it's centimetre level accuracy when cutting the pitch.
In a stadium enviroment, these targets will be positioned around the hoardings (either permanently installed, or attached to demountable brackets). In a typical training ground environment, the targets will be mounted on removable posts, with post holders sunk into the area surrounding the pitch.
A typical installation requires between 6 and 10 targets, depending on the environment (pitch slope and crown, obstructions, area dimensions, etc)
Once the targets are installed, the pitch is surveyed, using a theodolite attached to a laptop. This allows the position of the targets and pitch features (primarily goal posts and corners) to be recorded to millimetre accuracy.
The installation personnel, in consultation with the groundsman or stadium manager, will then create one or more regimes (work patterns). This data, combined with the survey information, is used to create the "world" files that are loaded onto the MAS Mower 01 - which is now ready to mow.
Typically, the installation personnel will stay with the vehicle during it's first regime, to ensure that the installation has been successful, and to fine-tune the vehicle for the new environment.
All staff authorised to operate the MAS Mower 01 will received full training from the installation personnel.
